Miravet Town & History

The privileged situation of this place suggests that it could have been an Iberian settlement. The profusion of this type of settlement, along the river, and the strategic situation of Miravet, both from a defensive and economic point of view, support this assumption, although for the moment no forceful actions have been carried out in the archaeological remains, yes, it is also possible Roman, according to the signs that can be observed in certain parts of its foundations or remains of opus spicatum on the walls. But what we do know is that, during the Arab rule, it was integrated into the defensive structure that was established along the Ebro, and that it constituted, together with Siurana, one of the last strongholds of Islamic power in the lands of the Principality. It is certainly in this period that a set of urban structures appears concentrated in the fortress with the name of "Muràbit", from where the current name of Miravet originates.
