Lleida - The Area

Lleida is a destination with a character all of its own and is committed to sustainable, responsible, ecological tourism. In May 2021, it received certification as a Biosphere Destination, in recognition of its commitment to the sustainable management of its tourism.

Our land, which enjoys a privileged natural setting and a magnificent cultural and human heritage, has been committed to sustainability for many years. This progressive increase in the sensitivity of its tourism companies and entities has resulted in a series of initiatives and strategies which share a common denominator: the need to manage this destination in a sustainable way. This forms part of a shared and comprehensive commitment to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a firm determination to promote:

  • An inclusive form of economic growth which favours the creation and maintenance of resources in order to guarantee the quality of life of the local population.

  • Social inclusion and to facilitate full employment throughout the local community.

  • The conservation of cultural values, diversity and heritage.

In this section you will find companies and entities that, within the framework of the Biosphere Destination certification, have committed themselves to responsible and ecological guidelines and supporting the sustainable growth of our tourist destination.

Gastronomy of Lleida

The gastronomy of Lleida is a homage to all that is good about the Mediterranean. Since time immemorial, our ancestors – who include the Romans - have known how to conserve and cultivate the art of gastronomy. Snails cooked in a casserole, baked on a tray or "a la brutesca" (cooked with burnt straw), "girella" (cured lamb sausage), IGP certified quality veal from the Pyrenees, cheese and butter from El Cadí, Costers del Segre DO wine, "coca de recapte" (a savoury pizza-like dish), "cassola de tros" (rural casserole), extra virgin olive oil from Les Garrigues, fruit from the Lleida plain, the killing of the pig and so many other specialities all help to provide a snapshot of the current gastronomy of Lleida. We would therefore like to invite you to come and enjoy the products of this territory which has been slowly and painstakingly shaped by the hand of man, from the Pyrenees to the Lands of Lleida.
